What is an email checker?

An email checker is a free tool that tells you whether an email address is real and able to receive mail — without sending anything to it. Instead of guessing, our checker looks up the domain’s mail servers (MX records) and opens a live SMTP conversation with them, exactly the way a sending mail server would, then asks whether the mailbox exists. You get the answer in seconds, together with the full server dialog so you can see precisely how the mail server responded.

How does email verification work?

Checking an address happens in a few automatic steps:

  1. Syntax check — we confirm the address is correctly formed: a valid local part, an “@”, and a real domain.
  2. MX lookup — we query DNS for the domain’s mail servers. No MX records usually means the domain cannot receive email at all.
  3. SMTP handshake — we connect to the highest-priority mail server, introduce ourselves (EHLO) and set a return address (MAIL FROM).
  4. Recipient probe (RCPT TO) — we ask the server whether it would accept mail for that exact address. A 250 reply means the mailbox is accepted; 550 means it does not exist.

We never deliver a message — the connection is closed the moment the server answers, and the whole exchange is shown live on the page so nothing is hidden.

What do the results mean?

  • Valid — the mail server accepted the address; the mailbox almost certainly exists.
  • Invalid — the server rejected the address (550); it does not exist or cannot receive mail.
  • Catch-all — the domain accepts every address, so a single mailbox can’t be confirmed (common on company domains).
  • Greylisted / try later — the server returned a temporary 4xx on purpose; the address may still be valid.
  • Unknown — the server hid the result or did not answer clearly, which some large providers do deliberately to fight abuse.

Why check email addresses?

Verifying addresses before you use them keeps your contact lists clean and protects your reputation as a sender. Removing invalid and mistyped addresses lowers your bounce rate — one of the main signals mailbox providers use to decide whether your messages land in the inbox or the spam folder. It also saves money on platforms that charge per contact, and it catches typos at sign-up before they turn into a lost customer or a failed password reset.

Is it free and private?

Yes. The email checker is free and needs no account. We do not store or share the addresses you check; they are used only to run the verification you asked for and to show you the result. For repeated checks of the same mailbox we briefly cache the outcome so we don’t contact the mail server again — gentler on everyone’s infrastructure, and faster for you.

Frequently asked questions

Can you verify any email address? Most, but not all. Some providers and “catch-all” domains deliberately accept every address or hide the real status to prevent abuse, so a definite answer isn’t always possible. We tell you honestly when a result is uncertain rather than guessing.

Does verifying send an email? No. We only ask the mail server whether the mailbox would be accepted, then disconnect — no message is ever sent.

How accurate is it? When a server answers clearly, the result is highly reliable. Accuracy drops only for catch-all domains and providers that mask their responses, and in those cases we say so.
